Hon Thilak Marapana the Foreign Minister at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, voiced the stand taken by the Government of Sri Lanka, on the updated report presented by the United Nations Human rights Commissioner General on the country’s human rights and reconciliation progress. Hon Minister Faiszer Musthapha Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government expressed his views on this as follows.

"Yesterday (21st) the Sri Lankan delegation to the 37th session of the Human Rights Council presented the stand made by the Government. It was especially pointed out that after 2015 the legal framework that is being implemented by the Government ensures the future progress in the areas of reconciliation and human rights, but this process requires time. Any actions that are taken by the Government has to conform to the Constitution, which is why the erroneous notion that foreign judges will be presiding over courts set up to try human rights cases was debunked.

Under the resolution 30/1 it was agreed that foreign judges will be presiding over the courts set up to try human rights cases it is clear that according to the Constitution of Sri Lanka this will not be possible.

I take this opportunity to state that the Foreign Minister in his speech mentioned that the law will be implemented in full with regard to the recent incidents that occurred in Kandy and that an investigation will be held on the lapses of law enforcement personnel.”
